On The Spectrum: The Many Faces of Autism

Synopsis

On the Spectrum looks at the multitude of ways in which individuals present--cognitively, physically, and emotionally--with Autism. The film also aims to capture the different ways in which families adjust to issues, as they arise, and as they resolve. The overall aspiration of the film is to create different portraits of life on the spectrum, helping to reduce stereotyping. The film will ultimately become a useful educational tool for a variety of audiences. 

 

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a condition that effects an ever-increasing amount of people around the world. And for many, a diagnosis, at first, maybe life-shattering; but for many, a diagnosis may bring relief and clarity. 

 

While we do not know exactly what causes ASD, scientists argue that both environment and genetics play a role. 

 

In the U.S., in 2000, the occurrence rate of ASD was 1 in 150. Currently, the CDC reports that 1 in 59 children are diagnosed with ASD annually (CDC). ASD is 4 times more common in boys than girls and can be found across all categories of race and ethnicity, geographical locations, and socioeconomic groups. In data taken between 2006-2008 in the U.S., 1 in 6 children had some form of developmental disability. 

 

On the Spectrum will chronicle the lives of different families from different ages, genders, racial/ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds. The story unfolds around how families handle change and adapt to what feels like a “crisis” at the time.
